This intervention plan is an innovative use of resources. From the perspective of a mental health nurse, we will not be using the resources that I would typically use. Resources that will be used are not under the control of a public health nurse. The perspective of a mental health nurse would support this plan as it creates a welcoming, community oriented working space where he could effectively do his job. As a public health nurse I would know that success is not guaranteed and the longevity of an intervention revolves around the success of the intervention. Perhaps the community center could provide a better up-bringing for a generation of youths, but I do not see how a community center would retract the target population from the downtown eastside. Therefore, we would not see a decrease in incidence or prevalence of mental health disease until the current generation passes away. The long trial to assess the effectiveness of the community center may jeopardise future funding for the intervention. The Aboriginal community could view the public health nurses as outsides and not trust them, openly defy them, or ostracize them because of their “European” ancestry. Cultural tensions aside the nurses would be working among a high prevalence of mental health disease and an at-risk population for drug use. This would not compromise the wellbeing of nurses, but it certainly jeopardizes wellbeing. An unintended consequence of this intervention would be the community center becoming a hub and accessible location for undesirable loitering and drug trafficking.
