Different Types and Treatment of Metastatic Cancer During the summer of 2007 I lost my grandmother because of lung cancer. After she was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, she moved into the hospital. Not long after, she died in the hospital because her cancer cells spread everywhere in her body. A half year after my grandmother passed away, a nightmare came to my family again. My grandfather was diagnosed with stage two throat cancer. My grandfather could move back into his house but still needed exceptional care. My grandparents’ cancer experiences make me wonder how metastatic cancer effects the human body and why different types of metastatic cancer have different chances to be cured. So what is cancer? Most cancers must go through blood or the lymph system to spread to new parts of the body. Heart pumps blood from the body is required through the lung blood vessels before going to other part of body therefore many cancers that commonly spread to the lungs first. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer. The American Cancer Society claims, “When some cancer cells spread out, it often means it’s not curable, but other metastatic cancer, such as prostate cancers, may be cured.” (American Cancer Society). Diverse types of metastatic cancer have different chances to be cured and the cause of metastatic cancer also can be different. Fidler is a professor from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Department of Cancer Biology he claims, “many human and animal tumors are heterogeneous and contain numerous subpopulation of cells that have different biological characteristics, including metastatic potential.” (Fidler 453). But “only 10 percent of all cancers are genetic. Other 90 percent are cause from unhealthy environment or unhealthy habits for instance, tobacco, alcohol, diet and some radiation from daily life. “(Lyss 27). Treatments will be given depending by the kind of cancer, patients’ age, patients’ health and body’s response to the drugs. As we know there have two types of tumors: benign and malignant.
