The challenges faced by those who are in middle adulthood may be the competing demands associated with raising children, caring for aging parents, maintaining a marriage, and employment. Physical changes is definitely a struggle for the majority of those in middle adulthood but maintaining a healthy lifestyle and positive attitude helps the struggle. Those in middle adulthood age is just a number. But visible signs are apparent, such as gray and thinning hair, wrinkles, the need for reading and bifocal eyeglasses, and some hearing loss. Middle-aged people benefit from greater life experience than they had when they were young. This contributes to happiness and makes emotional responses to stress less volatile. The empty nest syndrome is more a myth than reality. Most parents experience the best marital satisfaction of life after the kids have left the home for college or for good. People will find this stage allowing them to have time to self discover and care for themselves without guilt. Many adults go to college to participate in continuing education. Adults go to school mainly to improve work related skills and knowledge or to prepare for a change of career. There is still a desire to be productive but those who do not achieve it generally feel the effects of middle adulthood. The benefits of this particular life cycle stage is for women who are menopausing, being able to enjoy sex without the fear of pregnancy which gives them great pleasure in the bedroom. No longer will we experience discomfort caused by our menstruation, cramping and mood swings goodbye. Middle adulthood women will have decided that they are not going to just accept things the way they used to anymore.
