The Middle Ages

The Middle ages or the Medieval Period was the time in history between 400 and 1400 CE(2). It is often called the Dark Ages as much information was lost, skills forgotten and there was a lack of learning during this time. Yet there were some successes and developments as well, which is why this paper includes my own ideas on if the Middle Ages were a dark age in time. I will also describe the political, cultural, economic and religious developments of the Middle Ages.
Religious Developments
Religion was a huge part of people’s lives during the middle ages. People were baptized, married and buried with the church, they had to attend church meetings and follow the churches ideas and laws. If they didn’t, they would become outcasts

The knights where Noblemen who lived in castles and even though they were a lot better than the small peasant homes, they were still filthy and smoky due to the open fireplaces. The knights wore armor and had a shield with their family coat of arms, to identify them by in battle. Nobles also lived in castles where they ate fancy foods with spices and bread called trenchers which they shared with other people. Their children had toys and games and learned to read, write, dance and become a knight or a lady. Their clothes were fancy, of silk, velvet, damask and even some furs. They wore bright colours and women wore high headdresses while both genders wore jewelry. The king had a life of luxury with fine clothing, the best food and many …show more content…
There were some architectural and a few artistic developments, as the result of the illiteracy and the Christian faith of the people during the Middle Ages.(5) Many cathedrals and churches were built in a very gothic style, and as people could not read and learn the stories in the bible, statues and stained glass arts developed as a way to communicate these stories – without any text – to the people. Several poems and epics were written during this time and systems of writings and numbers were adopted from the Hindu-Arabic Numerals. Eventually, toward the end of the High Middle Ages when the black plague begun, the developments in arts and literature slowed down to a
