YouTube

YouTube is largest, most popular online video sharing website. Three men, Steven Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim founded YouTube on February of 2005. The company is based out of San Bruno California. YouTube’s slogan “Broadcast Yourself” explains exactly what the websites main function is. If registered for the site, users can upload, view, and share unlimited amounts of videos. The founders of the site were former employees of PayPal until their site caught attention. YouTube was created after Hurley and Chen had difficulty sharing videos from a dinner party they had at their apartment. The inspiration of YouTube was from people trying to find videos online of Janet Jackson’s performance at the 2004 Super Bowl. After the site was created it began to grow rapidly. By June of 2006 YouTube announced that more than 65,000 videos were being shared, and over 100 million videos were being viewed every day. YouTube is now the dominant provider of online video views, with a market share of 43%. An estimated 800 million new users register every month for the website. In October 2006, Google purchased YouTube for a whopping $1.65 billion dollars.
