Access to health care services is based on one’s ability to obtain and utilize services. Furthermore, access to care can be broken down into sub-categories of physical access, financial access, geographic access, temporal access, and sociocultural access (Barton, 2010). Many factors can potentially affect an individual’s ability to access personal health care services. Some of which may include race, gender, age, need, income, and insurance coverage (2010). Access to health care is important to improve an individual’s quality of life. Utilizing health care services can help lead to early detection and prevention of diseases, treatment of disorders and illnesses, and overall prolonged life expectancy ("Access to Health Services | Healthy People 2020," n.d.). Not despite other health care reforms, but in addition to. As a young adult kicked off her parents insurance, I quickly realized how expensive and complicated the health care industry was to navigate. At the age of eighteen, I began working full-time at a minimum wage job. I was unable to afford decent insurance and didn’t qualify for government assistance. That being said, I have been uninsured for over six years and receive all my medical care from the local health department. Why is it that even prisoners receive basic health care services, while a hardworking, law abiding citizen must choose between electricity or health care benefits?
