I learned a lot from this module. First, children learn the meaning of words “by immersed in an environment that’s rich with words, through lots of daily independent reading, teacher read-aloud, and explicit instruction” (Tompkins, pg.185). Children learn most words through reading and family activities, but teachers expand their vocabulary by teaching specific words and word-learning strategies. Teacher categorize unfamiliar words into three tiers that basic words, academic vocabulary, and specialized terms. Basic words are used socially, informal conversation at home and on the playground. Academic vocabulary; these words “have wide application in school context and are used more frequently in written than …show more content…
187). Tier 3 is specialized terms that these technical words are content specific and often abstract. When children develop word consciousness, they become more aware of words, use them playfully, and gain their power. I learned children need to learn more about a word when they use orally and in writing. They should know synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms of words to use correctly when they use them. I learned that when children come across an unfamiliar word while reading, they use context clues, analyze word parts, and check a dictionary to find meaning of word. They reread sentence containing the word to figure out meaning the word. If this strategy does not work, they look for familiar root words and affixes to aid in figuring out the meaning. If they do not figure out meaning of word, they go to next step is pronouncing the word to see if they recognize it when they say it. If this one does not work, they check the word in a dictionary or ask the teacher for help. As an English learner, this module helps me learn how to build my vocabulary in English language. I will use these strategies when I see the word that do not know before
