Depending on personal characteristics, power can be given by fear or respect. We see in leaders like Christopher Columbus or Hernan Cortez, a dominating fear that kept the people below in check. Columbus, claiming rights to all land and up to 10% of all acquired goods, would have been ill-fated if he had not struck fear into the hearts of his enslaved Indigenous peoples. As for Cortez, he would have been unable to overthrow Mexico without his Native American followers. However, other leaders would use respect in both character and religious senses to gain power and be successful. This tactic is very commonly known in the North American Indigenous people. Native Americans in movies and books are often known for their sanguine chiefs. Wise and insightful, a tribe would put all trust in whoever the leader was. A large part of Native American culture was focused around religious beliefs. With that being so, most of the power was held within religious icons and those who were
