The nervous system can be diseased in many ways. Some diseases, however, are much more deadly than others. Four of those include multiple sclerosis, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), aphasia, and Alzheimer's disease. These are life changing diseases. They affect the most important parts of your body, the nervous system.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease that can range from mild to devastating. It is an autoimmune disease. This is when the body's immune system launches an attack against itself. In this case, the immune system attacks the nerve-insulating myelin. It is unclear what causes the body to start this, but scientists are working to discover its cause. The symptoms of multiple sclerosis start with blurred/double vision, even blindness, then muscles weaken and become more difficult to control. Paralysis is possible if you have multiple sclerosis. Many of the people experiencing multiple sclerosis have problems with attention, memory, and concentration. Other symptoms of multiple sclerosis include hearing loss, depression, and numbness. The FDA has approved several forms of beta interferon. This has been known to slow relapsing multiple sclerosis. It is caused by clumps and tangles of fibers forming in the brain. Also, neurons in the brain and body can lose connection. The actual disease starts years before the symptoms become noticeable. During that time, drastic changes are occurring inside the brain. The first symptom of Alzheimer’s is usually memory loss. In addition, patients develop language problems and unpredictable behavior. Eventually, all those who have this disease die from it. Alzheimer’s disease is currently the 6th most common cause of death in the United States, and it is estimated that 5 million Americans have it. There is currently no cure for this
