Multiracial individuals identify themselves by more than one racial group, but society tends for people to choose one racial identity over another (Sue & Sue, 2016). Some issues and challenges that multiracial individuals may face are that individuals my compare themselves to other people surrounding them or they also face a need to choose one race over another, at a point in their lives, or deal with the need to find their identity.

There are many ways that multiracial individuals are similar and different from other groups. For example, a biracial individual may not be accepted by the Caucasian community because of the person's skin may be darker, coarser hair whereas in the African American community, a biracial individual may get rejected because that person has lighter skin or the way they talk. This can cause stress in a person's life while trying to figure out where he or she belongs in society. Other groups and multiracial individuals both deal with identity development. They feel

His mother is African American and his father is European American. His parents are concerned that he is picking up bad habits associated with low SES African Americans. James parents does not have want him to identify with that part of his black culture. James comes home smelling like alcohol and his grades are dropping and they are concerned. As a mental health counselor, I would be aware and research about multiracial identity. I would help James and his parents be more aware of the lack of perception of black culture within the family and address the racial concerns that James parents have. I would also look into who James is hanging around and the type of influence they have on him and I will also address the drinking and changing of his grades.
