“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires,” (Ward, n.d.). In other words, a great teacher has the power to influence those around them in a way that motivates them to chase their dreams and grow in the process. Fortunately, I’ve had the opportunity to find inspiration from a number of individuals. With their help and encouragement, I was able to discover my calling: to become an academic advisor at the high school and college level. A few people who have influenced my decision to become a teacher/mentor are my mom, a few teachers, and my high school academic advisor.
My story begins with my first teacher- my mom. My mom was a store manager at Holiday gas stations and received the Pinnacle award for her outstanding work performance. I admired her drive and intelligence and wanted to be just like her. Unfortunately, my mom started drinking when I was in the fourth grade and I no longer looked at her in the light that I once had. She passed away from the abuse during my senior year of high school. As a result of the loss of my role model to alcoholism, I had to find new individuals to look up to.

Mala and Mrs. Monroe. Mr. Mala was my seventh grade language arts teacher. I admired his knowledge, cool character, and passion for teaching. He was unlike other teachers because he treated his students like they were capable of doing more than what was expected. Mrs. Monroe was my high school English teacher. Mrs. Monroe was unique because of her calm temperament. She taught her students that kindness can go a long way and for this reason she was one of the most respected teachers in the school.
