My Writing Process

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” Essentially writing, to me, is a creative process that can be transformed into a multitude of possibilities. An individual can write about whatever passions or interests they have, and if they lack subject to write about then it influences them to experience new things. These new experiences then transform their writing skills and creative abilities, allowing them to compose meaningful pieces.
Throughout my college writing career, I was given the opportunity to express my voice in a creative way. Instead of being given strict “rubrics and prompts, laying out exactly what they wanted us to turn in,” we were allowed to create our own vision (Unit

Therefore, opportunities for creative and innovative pieces were slim. Unfortunately, this resulted in me developing a negative attitude towards writing and made me dread the entire writing process. This is because, in general, I am a naturally creative and expressive person, so I was never given the chance to enjoy and excel in high school writing. Writing, in my mind, was always viewed as a task. A task that never allowed me to express my true voice or use my voice to talk about the things that mattered to me. In contrast, college writing supplied me the optimal platform to share my creativity. This is strongly highlighted through my first writing assignment in unit one. This assignment asked us to talk about a pivotal moment in our life and discuss how it affected our character. For this project, I was able to express my creative voice, while explaining to the reader the meaning and importance behind this event. One of my favorite paragraphs from this piece is, “The sun, blistering and vibrant, beat down on our tiny pigtailed heads. Cement stairs ingraining themselves into our thighs, creating a cross-stitch pattern. I could hear birds rustling through the trees and I watched as one individual leaf departed from its branch. It, in my mind, was the perfect summer day” (Unit 1, Keep Smilin’).
