Often times in society, students ponder the best college or what occupation to pursue in the future. Some students know their exact plan upon graduating, however, others struggle with not knowing what careers are best for them. In some high schools, teachers encourage these students to take personalities such as the Myers Brigg Personality Test in order to help students gain knowledge about their personality type and what careers require those traits. For struggling students, they find the tests helpful because it allows them to discover jobs that require minds like their own. However, personality tests do no work for everyone. Some students know exactly what type of degree they wish to pursue however, their results say that they would not be a good fit for their dream occupation. This is where I disagree with taking personality tests in order to aid the process of life choices. I think that personality tests become beneficial when you try to understand what type of personality traits you process. However, I think they bring unnecessary stress when it comes to major decisions. For example, if you have a passion for the justice system but your personality does not match any career field that remotely involves the justice system, you might decide you should not do your dream job because of a test. When it comes to deciding what you want to do with your life, you should find things you are incredibly passionate for rather than having that choice be based upon your personality test. If I were told that I was unable to pursue my career because my personality does not fit that of a good lawyer, I would definitely feel discouraged. However, I wouldn’t let that stop me because I would rather work harder at trying to be the best I could be for that career rather than try to find a different occupation that I do not have any interest in pursuing. For example in section 9.02 a “Uses of Assessments”, the code establishes the fact that psychologist interpret the data they collect in a manner they believe is best explains their results. Another reason that personality assessments is in section 9.06 “Interpreting Assessment Results”, the APA addresses the issue that people of different backgrounds may have certain personal characteristics that are specific for their culture. With this known, people might only have certain traits because of how they are raised. This could prevent individuals from making decisions for careers because the results of their personality test were misinterpreted. Because of codes in place such as the Code of Ethics by the APA, students subject to take personality tests understand that although these test generally maintain quite a bit of accuracy, they are subject to their biases like most
