In 1887 a woman had tricked many people, including many doctors, and ended up on Blackwell's Island. Blackwell Island housed a large asylum more than three stories large and had a men's side and a woman’s side. The woman stayed in the asylum for ten days, taking note of the harsh conditions. On the tenth day she was free and began writing news articles about the asylum and later a book. Her pen name is, Nellie Bly. Her real name was Elizabeth Jane Cochran. On May 5, 1864, Elizabeth was born. She lived in a town called Cochran’s Mills near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was named in honor of Elizabeth’s dad, Michael Cochran, who was a property owner and mill operator. She achieved this in seventy-two days. Nellie wrote many articles about it and a book to follow. At age 31, Nellie married a millionaire manufacturer named Robert Seaman. Nellie quit journalism to tend to Robert’s falling health. Soon he died and Nellie was in charge of the Iron Clad Manufacturing CO.. She treated her workers very well but she did not handle the company's money well. Many people stole company funds, leading to its bankruptcy. Nellie went to work for the New York Evening Journal and went to Europe and wrote about World War I. After returning she began an advice column for women and worked very hard. At age 57, Nellie Bly died of pneumonia, ending her life adventure but not others knowing about it. Nellie Bly is a very good example of a courageous and determined woman. She raised awareness of asylums and helped send more funds to help the mentally ill rightfully. She also raised awareness of many corrupt businesses, baby selling rings, and more evil works that people weren't relieved were happening.
