Did you know that the official name of the country Nicaragua is Republica de Nicaragua? The capital city of Nicaragua is a city called Managua. In general, the type of government they have is republic. They gained independence from Spain in 1821. For the constitution, the Sandinista- era in 1987 it was improved for a better distribution of power among the four branches of government. Nicaragua is located in Central America and has Atlantic coastal plains rising to central interior mountains. One thing about here is they have many volcanoes because of the narrow coastal plain. The time at midday is usually when the big main meal is eaten and then the people take a small nap which they called a siesta. They take this nap because of the climate there during the afternoon which is usually the hottest driest part of the day. The people of Nicaragua are very welcoming and hospitable to everyone including strangers. For their special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, baptisms, etc., it is normal to bring a gift. For guests who are invited over for dinner, it is a nice gesture to bring the host a gift with flowers or candy. They say that “expressions of personal admiration are valued more than compliments on ones possessions”. Typical meals in Nicaragua are based on traditional foods like beans, rice, corn, plantains, yucca, and peppers. Some typical dishes that they make include tortillas, enchiladas, nactamales which are spiced meat and vegetables, and baho which is meant, vegetables, and plantains. Nicaragua has different variations of other foods. For the recipe Gallo Pinto, they use different beans, oils, spices, and sometimes add more ingredients. For example, in casamiento which is Salvadorian black beans and rice, they use black beans instead of red beans. Another example is on the Caribbean coast they use coconut oil instead of regular vegetable oil. As spices, they add a few dashes of bottled pepper sauce or workersterhire sauce for extra flavor. In Nicaragua a typical breakfast usually consists of cheese, eggs, Gallo pinto, and sweet plantains. It is also sometimes eaten with bread or corn tortillas.
