No Child Left Behind Policy No Child Left Behind is a social policy that significantly increased the federal government’s role in holding schools responsible for the academic progress of all students (Editorial Projects in Education Research Center). This policy put a special focus on ensuring that states and schools boost the performance of certain groups of students, such as English-language learners, students in special education, and poor and minority children, whose academic progress falls behind their peers. Under this social policy, schools are required to test each student in grades 3rd through 8th in math and science. However, its greatest impact definitely falls on the educational institution. The reason that this is true is because the students are not able to learn and comprehend at a rate that is synonymous with their own comprehension and the teachers are not able to teach in a way that is most comfortable and effect for them. Instead of being taught all areas of education they are being taught test taking skills and only information that is known to be on the standardized exams. This is also negatively affecting teachers because they cannot teach the material the same way they have been because they have to teach test taking skills in certain areas and the pressure to teach information that is guaranteed to be on the exam oftentimes leaves out information that is still important despite not being on the standardized exams. Abby Jackson’s article on the failures of No Child Left Behind supports these ideas about the negative effects of high-stakes testing stating that teachers and students are handcuffed by the policy (Jackson). They would explain No Child Left Behind as a negative policy for the society due to the inequality of different social classes. Upper social classes would have more of an advantage because of the living situations where middle and lower class would not have any advantages because they would lack the necessities to succeed during tests/ academics.
An interactionist is someone that develops their beliefs, identities and values according to individual and small group interactions. Therefore an interactionist would explain this policy as either negative or positive, which ever their peers or small group decide for this policy. They would base their thoughts on the thoughts and ideas of their
