A large number of students are considered non-traditional, which means they are most likely working, have a family and are going to school. “ Online students are perceived to be older and more career oriented “ (Mellander 66). As a result, these students need a format that will fit into their already overloaded schedule. Hybrid classes allow students to schedule courses around their work schedules, since most hybrid classes only meet in person one day per week and the rest of the course work is online. “Community colleges in particular have embraced online education as a way to better serve their large numbers of nontraditional students, many of whom juggle multiple responsibilities” (What We Know About Course Outcomes 1). Another benefit of hybrid courses is this set up permits the student to take additional courses which can lead to degree completion in less time. A hybrid course mimics a traditional course by meeting in person one day per week. A connection can be made between student and instructor, which is beneficial for academic support and future references. Students are also able to interact with fellow classmates, which is a valuable resource for socialization and educational success. “Blended classes generate the highest student evaluations of any learning mode at Central Florida” (Mellander 67). I feel this is a result of the combination of face to face instruction with online work. I am taking one hybrid class and making the connection with the instructor has brought the class to a personal level. I feel I have been successful in this course due to the human element that is added to the online
