1. Introduction
When consumers buy a new electronic device, they first need to learn how to use the device. User instructions are the most familiar type of data that are used by the business environment to inform the user about the usage of the product or service (Handbooks and Manuals, 2016). According to Palmitter, Elkerton, and Baggett (1991), users mainly face user instructions in form of a text included in the packaging of the product. However, these instructions are not always clear and, therefore, not often used by the users (Palmitter, Elkerton, & Baggett, 1991). Palmitter et al. (1991) argue that due to the challenging or unclear user instructions, users have a strong tendency to start using the product without reading the instructions. User instructions are available in various types: instructions can be offline and online documentation, in form of a software or a hardcopy version included in the package of the product (Handbooks and Manuals, 2016). The motivational elements are added to the instructive texts to create a positive attitude towards the task while carrying it out (van der Meij, Karreman, & Steehouder, 2009).
