Communication is essential. The nurse must be able to effectively communicate to the doctor and other members of the health care team what is going on with the patient. The Director of Nursing must be able to communicate and educate nursing staff about patient care and new policies or procedures. A modern team leader must identify and manage poor performing staff successfully and motivate them to act to re-establish competence or disciplinary procedures (Keegal, 2013). The employee-supervisor role affects how employees perform (Steers, & Mowday,1977). The Director of Nursing must be flexible. If an emergency arises, they must be able to stop what they are doing and assist with lifesaving interventions. If a nurse on the floor is unable to work a shift, they must be able to get it covered or go in and work the floor themselves.
