Ward sisters/charge nurses are responsible for annual appraisals of nursing staff. At this level nurses are appointed band 6 or 7 with a band 6 pay scale between £25,783- £34,530 and a band 7 pay scale at £30,764- £40,558. Progression is possible within clinical specialism to nurse practitioner. Secondments to achieve certain specialist qualifications at either full time or part time basis are also available.
At band 8 there are four different ranges of pay depending on experience and level of skills acquired. At this level progression onto a nurse consultant or matron is possible and the pay scale varies between ranges A to D at £39,239 to £81,618.
