Obesity
Since the 1960s obesity has been on the rise in America and is not slowing down (“Facts on Obesity”). About one-third of the American population or roughly 78.6 million American’s are affected by obesity (“Facts on Obesity”). Likewise, obesity is increasing in other parts of the globe and has become one of the world’s major health issues. Obesity has become more prevalent in recent times due to external factors over internal factors.
The words “overweight” and “obesity” are and have been misconstrued for a very long time. First, to understand the true definitions of these words, one must know what the Body Mass Index (BMI) is. The body changes drastically and health problems that would not occur normally, start. For instance, when a person starts to gain an unhealthy amount of weight, the chance of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, strokes, and some cancers increase at an alarming rate. Some diseases have a relationship with one another, such as coronary heart disease and a stroke. Coronary heart disease can be described as a buildup of plaque up in the arteries of the heart; once enough built up, some can break off and cause a blood clot, blocking off blood flow to the brain causing a stroke.
