Odysseus Greek Hero

“I’m only human” is a common phrase used to describe our imperfections, but no one can be perfect not even a god. After reading the book Heroes, Gods, and Monsters by Bernard Evslin and The Odyssey an epic by Homer which follows Odysseus, a greek hero, in his journey home I was able to dissect these greek characters. I learned about their flaws and strengths, taking these things into perspective, when asked to compete on the show “Craft Wars” with a greek character of my choice Odysseus was the most pragmatic option. Hephaestus, the god of craft, was a viable choice as well, but when analyzing both of their character traits Odysseus proves to be the most practical. As a baby Hephaestus was brutally thrown off Mount Olympus by his mother, but seeing as he made beautiful things Hera asked for him to come back, “[he] agreed because he loved her [ and was willing to] excuse her cruelty to him.”(Evslin 50) He is extremely reserved and will rarely ever disagree or share his thoughts with others. Because of this I would solely be producing the ideas for the creative process. However Odysseus is extremely intelligent with a quick wit, when trapped in the cave with the cyclops Odysseus tells him that “[his] name is Nohbody [stating that his] mother, father, and friends [all] call him Nohbody.”(Homer 871) In a dilemma Odysseus he would have no problem coming up with a well thought out solution. If the time were running out in the competition and the craft was not yet finished as a complication had been reached Odysseus’s calm attributes would be extremely helpful. He was able to outwit Polyphemus under pressure remaining calm even in an extremely dire situation, whereas Hephaestus's reticent nature makes him unable to help solve and devise ideas making him the unappealing
