“Sometimes its the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.” -Drake. The Odyssey by Homer is one of the greatest epic poems of all time, with 24 different stories. Its about King Odysseus’s journey in order to get back to his kingdom Ithaca and his family after being gone for 20 years after the Trojan War. Odysseus went through many obstacles in order to get home, only to find out that suitors had tried to take over his kingdom and his wife, Penelope. The Odyssey shows that often the journey is more important than the destination. The first time that Odysseus found the journey was more important than the destination was when he was with his crew on The Land of The Lotus Eaters. “All hands aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home.” (Homer, 564) Showing Odysseus’s great sense of leadership and strength. His motivation was to see his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus, which made the journey just as important. The second way Odysseus’s journey was more important was when he and his crew came upon the Sun God Apollo’s, Cattle. This is shown through the melancholy experience, as all of Odysseus’s crew dies after eating Apollo’s cattle, even after he warned them. “The cattle here are not for provision or we pay dearly for it.” (Homer, 585) Showing how even though all of Odysseus’s men die we still continues his journey to his home Ithaca. The final way that Odysseus’s journey mattered more was when we returned home with all the knowledge and skill he had learned while trying to return home to Ithaca. Seeing that his home was overrun by suitors, he made it his mission to get his kingdom back after the long journey he had just taken. “Odysseus only shook his head only thinking of bloody work.” (Homer, 603) This quote shows that even though Odysseus is home from his long journey he still is taking a journey as to kill all of the suitors that came into his
