In the epic The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is an effective leader for his men. After traveling for a few years after the Trojan War, Odysseus wanted to return home, but he didn’t know the path back to his home, so he visited Circe, the goddess of sorcery. Odysseus and his men return to Circe’s island, where they are waited upon by the sirens. Odysseus knew he needed to protect himself from the danger soon to happen, “Steer wide; keep well to seaward; plug your oarsman's ears with beeswax kneaded soft; none of the rest should hear that song” (Homer, Lines 670-672).
