Of Mice and Men - Should George Have Killed Lennie?

John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, is full of controversial scenes. One of these scenes involves the murder of a old man’s lifelong companion, an old dog, for the convenience of others. Throughout the book there are examples of racism and sexism. There is also a few scenes to make the reader think deeper about what happened. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, the character George makes a controversial decision to kill his best friend, Lennie. I believe George needed to kill Lennie and the homicide is justified.

George killed his best friend, Lennie, in the book Of Mice and Men, and it was necessary. Lennie had caused much trouble for both himself and George making it so their life was much harder than it needed to be. Those who believe that since Lennie has a mental disability, he should be given mercy and help rather than harsh punishment. When the ranch hands find the body of Curley’s wife and begin creating a lynch mob to go out and find Lennie, George talks to Slim again and says, “ ‘Couldn’ we maybe bring him in an’ they’ll lock him up? He’s nuts, Slim. He never done this to be mean’” (Steinbeck 97). George explains that Lennie doesn’t understand his actions and he doesn’t realize something is wrong unless someone tells him that it isn’t right. It is a factor that shows how Lennie could be considered innocent and not a danger to society because he has never done anything wrong due to hatred, he did it thinking it was okay. Lennie doesn’t know right from wrong and assumes what he does is okay unless someone tells him it was wrong to do.
