2. Animalism was first instilled in the minds of the farm animals by the highly regarded Old Major. In his last speech, Old Major spoke of humans as the enemy. He repeated that the abolishment of humans would led to a better life for all animals and that all of their problems would disappear if humans are not present. Something that was made clear by Old Major was that all animals are equal. He believed that as long as they had four legs or wings they were not the enemy. ”And, above all, no animal must ever tyrannise over his own kind. Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All animals are equal” (Orwell Ch 1). Marxism contains various theories one being the theory of alienation. In this theory, Marx explains that because workers in capitalist societies don’t own the means of production they sell their “labor power” to capitalist who own them (Ollman). “Through labor which alienates them from their activity, product and other people, workers gradually lose their ability to develop the finer qualities which belong to them as members of the human species” (Ollman). Marxism and Animalism are similar as they both promote the idea of “egalitarianism,” or the belief that all people are equal in political, economic, and social life (Dictionary.com).
