According to Annette Lareau, author of the article "Invisible Inequality,” the upper class is able to afford prestigious school systems and valuable structured activities. Children experiencing oppression are less involved and do not have education advantages, leading to less opportunities. An example of oppression on the lower class is a student in my Campus Kids program expressed he could not complete his homework because he did not have any pencils or paper. In addition, social ties can cause oppression on the lower class. In the article, "The Saints and the Roughnecks," by William Chambris the Saints (upper class) are respected by the school and community members even though they exhibit delinquent behavior, equal to that of the Roughnecks. The Roughnecks have weak social ties and were consistently persecuted by the school and community.
