Imagine walking into a room to see someone staring into a mirror, thin to the bone, with tears rolling down their face. This person thinks they are fat. This could be your mother, father, sister, brother. Your friend, your peer. This could be you. It has become so easy for us to fall into these traps. To fall into the pressures society has created for us to be ‘perfect’. We are so easily convinced that we must strive for these unreachable goals, to become what society so wrongly perceives as flawless. Men are told that they should strive to have broad shoulders and a small waist whilst still maintaining a reasonable amount of muscle content. No matter what a person looks like society finds a way to degrade them. “You should eat more” or “you would look better if you weren’t so skinny” are the types of comments that are thrown around daily, demeaning people for their small figures. Larger and more curvy people are constantly told that they are fat, with negative comments being thrown around such as “you would look better in that if you were skinnier” convincing those with larger builds that they are not good enough. Even those who have muscular builds are criticised and told their obsessed with exercising and gaining muscle. Women are frequently told that having muscle, makes them look masculine and men who fail to maintain an adequate amount of muscle, based on society’s standards are told they have a feminine build. Do you see the issue here? As a society, we are telling these people who have perfectly healthy bodies that they are not good enough. How do we expect ourselves to feel comfortable with our bodies if we are constantly telling each other that nothing is good enough? We are placing these great deals of pressure on people to change their body to match these ridiculous distorted views of beauty that have become common belief amongst
