Parents want to set their children up for success and a good education. However, some parents go through extra measures to what they think will help push their child to a better future. In Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success, he discusses how many parents are holding their children back a year before kindergarten in an effort to increase their intelligence. Redshirting is a term in which a child is held back a year or more so they can mature and mentally develop. It is rumored to increase the child’s performance educationally and in sports. However, many believe it does not benefit anyone and can even be a disadvantage. Redshirting should be allowed in the American education system because it can set children up for a better future.
