Paget’s Disease is a disease that affects the bones in the body. After being discovered by Sir James Paget in 1876, this disease was named osteitis deformans. Today it is known as Paget’s disease of bone. There is not a lot known about the history of this disorder. It is found among Western European descents. Paget’s disease is a bone disorder, which interrupts the body’s normal bone recycling process. This means when old bone needs to help, there is no new bone tissue to take the place of the old ones. This causes the bones in the body to become enlarged and deformed. The bones can be dense but are often fragile because of the breakdown that is excessive and also because of the deformity that is happening. It is found mostly in the skull, …show more content…
Pain in the affected area, bone deformity, brittle, bones break easily, and arthritis are some of the symptoms. Symptoms of Paget’s disease are similar to other bone disorders. There are many cases where people do not experience any actual symptoms. Severe pain is the number one symptom. And the pain is different depending on which area is affected. Very rarely does this disease develop into bone cancer. In order to discover this disease, it can be done in different ways. Some of the ways are x-rays, blood tests, bone specific alkaline phosphatase test (the measurement of the level of alkaline phosphatase in the bone), and radionuclide bone cans. Doctors can diagnose this disease just by a normal physical checkup and looking at the areas where there is pain. Besides the common knowledge of the disease, the inside of Paget’s disease has a deeper level. This disease is known for the misleading osteoclasts. Osteocytes become less organized and are woven together in a weird order, which cause the deformity. There is an abnormal high rate of osteoclasts becoming formed and there are many osteoclasts that are multinucleated. Besides the osteoclasts, the osteoblasts are affected. Osteoblast numbers are increased in the Paget’s …show more content…
It was associated with a mutation related to the gene SQSTMI that encodes the protein sequestosome 1. The disease is said to have been brought over by the colonists from Western Europe. In a study, 15 in 100 people with Paget’s disease have a close relative that also has this disease. Whom does this disease affect? People older than 40 are more likely to get this disease. By age 50, it is even more common for people to get this disease. Men are more likely to get this disease. There is a 3 to 2 ration for men to women. By age 80, 5 in 100 women and 8 in 100 men have Paget’s disease. People who have a western European decent are more likely. The United Kingdom has the highest rate of people who have Paget’s disease. Although there is a viral infection that causes Paget’s disease, most cases are due to genetics. Most people do not even realize that they have the disease. It can be found in the viral infection because of genetics. There is no actual known reason to how it is spread. The only way as of right now is through genetics and the viral infection. Most of the time people act normal and do not have symptoms when they have this disease. If someone is having extreme pain, that could be a sign of the
