Paget's disease is distinguished by changes in the normal process of bone formation. Bone itself is a living material made by the body through the ongoing development of formation and breakdown. The combination of these two specific actions is called remodeling and the body uses it to build strong bones and healthy bone tissues. During the earlier stages of Paget's disease, the bone tissue is broken down and is absorbed much faster than usual. The life expectancy of individuals who have Paget’s disease is not altered though it truly does affect the quality of life due to the remission that progressively worsens over time. Depending on the severity of Paget’s disease in the individual, self care recommendations include but are not limited to: a splint for an area at high risk for fracture, avoidance of excess mechanical stress on involved bones, regular exercise to maintain skeletal health, joint mobility and normal body weight, intake of adequate vitamin D or calcium. It is important for one with Paget’s disease to take care of themselves, not just physically but emotionally too. Living with a chronic disease like Paget’s disease can be quite stressful.
