DISABLED GROUP

Current health profile

Disabled people are people do not have a full function as a normal human being. They are unable to perform due to physical or mental disability. It is hard to define because the definition can lead to an effect that makes the disabled feel discriminated and affects their lives.
According to Australia Institute of Health and Welfare, about 18.5% of the population are suffering disabilities. That’s about 1.4 million people. However, Australians are living longer and getting more disability-free years.
Life expectancy
Some studies have found that people with disabilities live shorter lives than those without a disability. The disabled people are more likely to live in poverty, low levels of workforce and education, etc. They may also have to face discrimination, bullying because of their disabilities.
Education
People with disabilities have lower levels of education compared with others.
They are less likely to have completed Year 12 at only 24% of the population compared with 46% for people with no disability.
They are less likely to have a higher qualification such as certificate, advanced diploma, bachelor degree or above, etc. 41% compared with 51%.
Children with an intellectual disability have better academic and social outcomes in mainstream schools.
Income levels
Higher levels of education lead to a higher possibility to find a good incomes job. Therefore, with low levels of education, people with disabilities have a lower income than people with no disability. Sometimes, income inequality is not only due to lower levels of education. The disabled have lower incomes even when they have the same levels of education as people with no disability.
In Australia, 45% of people with disabilities live in poverty. This is a huge number compared with other countries in the world.
Access to health services
People with disabilities have their rights to access to health services. They can get support, funding, etc from the Government and some organizations for people with disabilities. 1.2 million received services from disability support services and/or the Home and Community Care program (HACC) program in 2010 – 2011.
Employment status
In Australia, people with disabilities have a lower possibility to be employed.
In 2009, the unemployment rate for Australians with a disability was 8%, higher than 5% for people with no disability.
People with disabilities who are employed are more likely to be working part-time rather than full-time than those people without a disability (38% compared with 31%)
They also receive a lower wages compared with the general population.
Sociocultural determinants
Sociocultural determinants have lots of effects to the poor health of people with disabilities. People with disabilities are living in poverty due to the low incomes jobs. They are also facing and suffering discrimination, bullying. The social and economic disadvantage in which they live is a major contributor to their poor health.

 People with disabilities are facing the lower live standard than the general population. This may because they don’t have the same capability as the normal people. Moreover, some people are still sticking with the stereotypes of disabled people and discriminate them. Another reason for this is the poor public perception. People with disabilities are suffering inequities and we need to make it equal for them.

Strategies to enhance the group’s personal skills

People with disabilities are dealing with the discrimination. Discrimination is wrong and it needs to be stopped. In order to stop discrimination, we have to help the disabled people and enhance their personal skills so that they can handle any situations and be able to seek help. They need to be confident in themselves; they need to know that lots of people out there are willing to help them.
We can create an organization for the disabled
