Dead on Arrival

“The police found another body near the river on South Street,” said my mother from the kitchen.
I shut off the TV and went up to my room, I tried to start my homework, but I was too distracted about the deaths that were happening in our little town. Dad thought these deaths were either man’s doing or through some kind of rare disease. Gosh, five people dead already.
Mom called me down for supper and Dad was talking indistinctly on the phone to somebody. Mom motioned for me to sit down; she only did this when something serious was happening.
“I think that I will have to help the government find out what is happening with all these deaths . . . if we don’t, then we will be in trouble, and I don’t want to put you in any kind of danger.” We ate in silence, and I put my plate in the sink and left the table

As sheriff of the town, Dad had a lot on his hands, and with these recent deaths, he’d gotten a load more. . . . I wish that I could—
Just then, I heard someone scream, interrupting my thoughts. Well, it sounded more like a shriek and it was piercing. I ran into the park and saw a dark figure running away from someone on the ground. I shouted after him or her, but it was no use. I went closer to the person on the ground, and I bent down and examined her. Suddenly, she grabbed my hand and said, “Please tell my family that I love them and that somebody will protect them. . . .” Her voice trailed off as her head fell back into my hand. I lifted my hand gently from her head; her face rolled and my face fell.
There were bloody marks all around her upper back and body. I quickly turned over the body and saw that the woman’s eyes had turned white. Different bugs were coming out of her mouth, eyes, and nose. They all crawled on me at once, and I screamed and swatted them, until they finally let go of me. I ran out onto the road and waved to a passing car, motioning for them to help
