Personal Narrative: The Basketball Team

The buzzer finally rang to signal the end of the girls’ varsity basketball game. I was looking into the gym through the window of the door, waiting to run in the gym to warm-up for the game. It was senior night so the gym was packed tight with people in the bleachers leaving hardly any seats left to watch the game. As soon as the girls cleared the gym, the seniors of the men’s basketball team were recognized and warmups began. This was a huge game for our team because we were playing Lincolnton who was a good team and it would determine where our team would end up placing third in the conference standings on the season. As time ticked off the clock, the team made their way to the bench to get ready for the announcement of starting lineups and then tip-off.

Very early in the game, I could tell that the gym was starting to get very hot due to all the people in the gym and the intensity at which both teams were playing. The score of the game stayed very close and by the end of the first half, the game was only controlled by a few points in our favor. We knew we had to keep playing well in the second half to beat Lincolnton. Early in the third quarter, we kept control of the lead and was playing outstanding basketball. About mid-way through the third quarter, I was called the go back into the game. A couple of plays after I entered the game, I caught the ball on the wing and drove baseline looking to score. A defender from Lincolnton stepped over into my path to try and stop me from scoring and in the process, my ankle landed perfectly on his foot and I went down to the ground holding my ankle as I felt a tremendous amount of pain. I knew that my ankle was very hurt and I was forced to the leave the game. The team went on and won
