Although there are credible arguments to support each side of the debate, it is clearly inappropriate for the government to enact a one-child legislation in order to control the population. Having children in general is a basic human right, and the decision to have multiple children is ultimately up to the woman capable of giving birth to said children. If a child has a sibling, whether the sibling be older or younger, that child could learn a lot and gain experience from that sibling. It is a scary thought that a child could be robbed of the possibility of having a sibling just from the government coming between the parents and their rights of having children.

According to Dr. Terri Apter, a child psychologist, “Siblings know you better than anyone.” A sibling can be very powerful and influencing for a child; the government should not have control on whether a child should have a sibling or not. But the one-child legislation, in fact, may not actually be the best thing for the population. There are plenty more options to decrease the size of the population than just controlling the number of children.
