General Purpose: To Persuade
Outcome Statement: At the end of my presentation, my audience will understand a couple of the major negative outcomes that are associated with partying too extremely and often in college and by taking an oath to be responsible in the event that they do attend college parties.
Thesis: As college students we are all expected to maintain a level of decency and should party responsibly in order to achieve high grades, avoid life threatening situations and maintain a well-respected reputation.
Attention: Partying is an experience that comes along with the college package. It offers some of the greatest opportunities to meet new people and form long lasting relationships. However, it is possible to have too much of a good thing, partying too hard and too often can have long-term, negative consequences. A 40 year old man I had the pleasure of meeting last semester told me about his college experience pertaining to the reason of how and why he flunked out. He had received a scholarship to attend Michigan State University, was majoring in Criminal Justice and flunked out in the first semester due to attending parties in excess; his dream was short-lived. We all know that college requires a lot of hard work. The assignments given are extremely more difficult than that of high school; it is your responsibility to earn your grades. When an individual parties excessively they sacrifice valuable study time that is essential in order to excel in school. 31% of college students missed a class due to substance abuse, according to the Core statistics, and 22% tanked an exam or essay (Burrell, 2008). Research has shown that partying which is often accompanied with drinking reduces one’s sleep and lowers intelligence, both of which are essential to excel. In order for one to achieve high grades they must party in
