For many people, Political correctness is old and something of the past, but it is still used today. It is what gives people a backbone to not worry what others think and to stand up for what they believe. Political correctness destroys equality within the uneducated citizens by manipulating them, twisting the law, and by worrying too much about what people think. People usually do not fully understand what political correctness is. It is defined as avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression. Colleges are cracking down on political correctness; for example, a student gave a presentation on gun rights and was disciplined for it. A college in Texas prohibits the use of supercilious remarks such as “sweetie”, “honey” or “sweet girl”. “Colleges across the United States are making speech codes to keep young adults in boundaries” (Lukianoff 26). A student would be destroying the idea of political correctness if they were to step outside of the boundaries set by the speech codes. …show more content…
Speech codes stop a student's drive to be individual and voice his or her own opinion. “Foundation for Individual Rights in Education(FIRE) found that just about 71% of the 375 top colleges have speech codes” (Lukianoff 26). Anytime a student stood up against speech codes it was overridden, and thought of as being disrespectful to the campus and their peers. Colleges try to protect their reputation and dignity so they will be a well thought of college, but they end up twisting the
