Political discourse is defined in the Merriam -Webster dictionary as "verbal interchange of ideas pertaining to political ;" and as "formal and orderly and usually extended expression of thought on a subject". But does political discourse even exist anymore? recently it has changed, Instead of mature debates, it has morphed into both political parties throwing childish insults at one another. How has it become this way? What are the main factors shaping political discourse? The three main factors are the human need for entertainment, the news and media, and the internet. instances of this can be found anywhere from a YouTube comment section to a presidential debate. why is this happening? because it is boring to watch two old men or women kindly correct and refute each other. this does not mean that all politicians stand at a podium and shout over their opponents. There is a multitude of politicians who bring forth logical arguments and debate respectfully. but if you examine patterns in previous elections usually the nice guy finishes last. for example the 2016 presidential election. there were several candidates who discussed intelligent policy. such as Dr. Ben Carson with his support of homeschooling and teaching values in schools, Sen. ted Cruz his idea to help the needy by encouraging American citizen to donate to charities, and Sen. through recent history the internet has been turning the world on its head, and politics is no exception. with the rise of social media it has become easier than ever to spread thoughts and ideas. politicians have taken advantage of this tool and use it to address the public. as American citizen they have the right to free speech and therefore can comment on and share the post however they like, similarly to how it works in a face to face conversation except for one detail. you cannot hide behind a screen in face to face conversation. the sense of safety allows people to post whatever they wish, knowing there will not be any serious consequences. it is much easier to be bold when you are safely tucked away in your parents basement. This "boldness" has led to many people saying things they would never dream of saying to a person's face. every partisan has partaken in this activity. meaningless insults are thrown left and right. some of these insults include.... those these insults are not very hurtful. but they can be extremely frustrating. imagine trying to get a point across but someone keeps delegitimizing your argument by calling you juvenile names. many people forfeit discussions on account of this causing neither side to get discussed leaving America in the dark on a platform that was created to
