Polygamy is not something that most people really know about. Polygamy is defined as a marital system in which one man is married concurrently to more than one woman (Hamdan, Auerbach, and Apter).Polygamy is not common in the United States, but the most common case known in today's society would have to be the TLC television series Sister Wives. [Polygamy] is also particularly common in other countries and it is estimated that marriages of more than 50% of all wives in some cultures are polygamous ( Hamdan, Auerbach, and Apter). Polygamy can cause problems within the family and the people involved. In some cases in a polygamous family abuse can happen. The abuse that can occur within a polygamous marriage defines polygamy to mainstream society, thereby contributing to society's misperceptions about the nature of abuse in intimate relationships (Faucon). The more pressing justification centers on the perception that polygamy results in abuse of women and children (Faucon). Different things besides abuse can happen in polygamous families. In a polygamous family there are a lot of people around at all times and that can cause many problems with the younger children and early teenagers that may be involved in the family. Some of the problems that may occur, may be that the younger children are competing against one another for the attention of an adult. When somebody is a part of a polygamous family, they can come up with new ways to get along with one another. Polygamous family members may say that having so many members in one family helps keep a steady flow of day to day complications that come with having a big family. Having multiple family members means that they will always have somebody to talk to if they have issues that they are not comfortable sharing with a certain person from within the family. Having so many people in one family may help the younger kids bond with one another and get more comfortable around a bigger crowd at a younger age than most kids will when they’re just becoming teenagers and young adults. Being involved with a bigger crowd at a younger age will help the children adapt to college, where they are around a large amount of people for a majority of the day. The more comfortable people become around a big crowd the more comfortable they will become at trying new things. When one of the kids is feeling depressed they will always have somebody to express how they feel about something too. Being apart of a big family helps the people involved feel loved by always being surrounded by people that love them very
