“During the late 1800s and the early 1900s the Canadian and American government outlawed a variety of traditional indigenous ceremonies, including pow wows.” Pow wows are a social event celebrated by Indigenous people. Although there are many stories about where and when pow wows actually began, most lead to the Great Plains and the tribes living there. As the world modernized, so did pow wows, but the arrangement and structure did not. Today, pow wows still have ceremonies exchanged, dances presented and songs sung. When did the first pow-wow originate? The first pow wow was in Oklahoma in 1879 organized by the Poncas. The majority of native men chose to or had been ordered to be in dangerous positions, their hope was to prove themselves on the battlefield so they would be able to return home with full citizenship and dignity. Religious freedom for Native Americans began to cease in the 19th century. During this time, a “Peace Policy” was created to eliminate the “indianness” of Native Americans. This policy gave Americans the belief that they had the right to take away Native peoples from their homeland along with their freedom. There were ceremonies and practices outlawed, forced placement on reservations, and the establishment of boarding schools. This went on until 1978 when the American Indian Religious Freedom Act was passed, which allowed Native peoples’ to access sacred sites, possess sacred objects, and the freedom to worship through traditional rites.
