One skill I have been practicing at placement this week was problem solving. I have chosen this skill as I set a goal for myself to enhance and improve my ability to not only approach conflict but also work on the prevention of it.
Describe how you implemented this and what the outcome was:
When it comes to implementing problem solving skills in the classroom as well as the outside the class. Using the skills we went over during seminar such as planned ignoring and signal interference, I consciously kept them in my mental toolbox as a form of conflict prevention. Now that I’ve built deeper connections with the youth, I find myself being a primary option for them to resort to when in conflict. All three components were practiced in almost all problem solving situations I enountered. There a plethora of different methods and techniques one can use to solve problems between young students, and most of the conflicts that occur can be seen coming several minutes before the climax of the conflict occurs. I also learned that sometimes humour adds a lighter, more laid-back feel to problem solving, which in turn allows for the youth to be more open and more willing to seek a solution. However, this does not work for all students as some prefer to be more direct, some prefer not to talk about the conflict for an hour or so before working on resolving the problem. When I was confronted by more difficult problems I needed to solve between students I would make sure to ask for help from my supervisor when I needed it and listened carefully when the students
