Professional Nursing Nursing is known as an important profession which takes on the responsibility and continuous care for the sick, disabled and dying. As a part of the healthcare system, people and communities around the world greatly benefit from the care of nurses. There are many types of nurses, and due to this, the profession continues to grow. Customarily, nurses are dynamically involved in healthcare research, management, and patient advocacy. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the historical background of professional nursing, various practices, and professional nursing today.
History of Professional Nursing The history of professional nursing began with a nurse by the name of Florence Nightingale. Nightingale was the daughter of a wealthy British family, who decided to challenge social conventions and become a nurse (Jolley, 2007). The educational requirement for nursing is about three to four years, at a university level, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (Nunes da Silva et al.,2018). This level of education permits nurses to apply key concepts, research, and policies to difficult and life-threatening dilemmas. As a professional nurse, there are various values and morals that should be followed when interacting with patients. These are known as the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics.
