#4: (75 words minimum) Look at pg 103-105 in Spirit on horticultural lifestyle. The Hmong have a hard time adapting to American lifestyles, and we would likely have a hard time adapting to their traditional lifestyle in Laos. Describe 3 things about their lifestyle that sound difficult and/or would require traditional ecological knowledge that a typical Westerner simply doesn't have.
First, they do not have electricity, so the most of the things would be inconvenient for Westerners. For instance, they use a lamp to light up the room instead of using electric lights. Also, without having electric energy, they cannot pump up water. Thus, they have to go to a stream and to carry water the water for cooking and bathing.
Second, they have to grow their food by themselves. Since industrial agriculture is common in the Western societies, people are used to get food from stores. Therefore, it would be really difficult for Westerners to grow food like rice, peppers, corn, and cucumber to sustain themselves like Foua’s family used to do. Further, to feed and butcher animals like chicken, cow, and pigs would be tough for Westerners.
