Quinceaneras happen all over the world in different countries such as Mexico, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, and even America. It is usually celebrated with a structured party of different activities. According to Socci, “Despite cultural differences and individual preferences among families, the core meaning remains the same: the quinceaera marks the passage of a young girl’s life from childhood to adulthood. It is also used to introduce the new young adult woman to society in the company of family and friends” (Socci). Essentially, no matter the culture or what other families do in a quince, the whole point is to gather family members and friends together to celebrate this new season. The quinceanera also includes a daughter and father dance, which is a special moment shared between the two as the father recognizes his daughter's growth. The reason the Latin community does quinces is because it marks the beginning of womanhood and the end of childhood. Quinceaneras occur when the teen turns 15 and honors this new stage in life of maturity. According to Lofgren, “The purpose of a Quinceanera is to mark the passage from youth into womanhood in a young woman's life through ceremony and celebration. It provides a day to honor and acknowledge the traditions of the Hispanic and Catholic culture and the important transition that every young woman experiences as she matures, both in the eyes of society and in her own life” (Lofgren). The goal of this celebration is to make the quinceanera feel special and bring attention to her. It highlights her beauty and growth as a young woman.
