I protect myself from the pressure that people put on me in society by not listening to what people tell me to do. The quote states that there are numerous pieces of history that we don't know about. What I interpret from this is that Baldwin is saying that America's history is twisted in a somewhat beautiful and treacherous manner. As time passes, living has become difficult for numerous races. African Americans had the most difficulty living the American dream during the 19th century. From my perspective, immigrant individuals with Latin origin seem to be having difficulty living the American dream now.
Lesson 12
"Revolutionary Dreams" conveys that the author wishes to change her society in a way that will benefit the world. Her old dreams included ridding the world of discrimination and segregation. Instead, she compromises to achieving her everyday chores due to the fact that she believes she cannot achieve something greater, being an African American woman.
Many African Americans accepted their fate due to the fact that it had been their "way of life" for a long period of time. When others started speaking out, I believe that most were afraid of what change would do to the lives that they have known for so long. I do not believe that was the right choice. Life has changed for minorities because most people have learned to accept others for the way they are. Yes, this is due to the ethnic/racial group of minority.
