Earlier style of clothes were worn very differently than they are today. They were mostly made by someone who lived in the household. Fabric was a difficult and time consuming product to make. Different religions had different ways of making the fabric and what it meant to them. For example, the “Polynesians spent hours beating the plant fibers and tree bark into tapa cloth, and Hawaiians part of this practice took on religious significance and conducted in sacred spaces.”

For most people the clothing that was made was not always a best fit because it was sometimes made with only one or two cloths to minimize on waste, so religions had their own ways of holding up the baggy clothing, most religions had their own approach on the “belt”.

Women in particular looked towards clothes that fit them more generously and had a flow and volume in the skirt and dress. Men wore suits that were fit to them by tailors, although not all could afford the tailor, men that could, visited the tailor several times a month to be fitted.

Before the Civil War, clothes that were manufactured were available, but not in large quantities. Coats, jackets and undergarments were the only available clothes that were ready to go. Most people made their clothes at home with family. During the war, factories started to be built and produce uniforms for the soldiers. The sizing scale they used then is still being used today.

Women’s manufactured, ready to go clothing came about in a slower manner and women didn’t like the fact they didn’t make the clothing for awhile. Over time, though, women became more intact with the fashion industry and women started to buy more ready to go clothing. This also led women to leaving the house more often and becoming a part of society, because they were not home making clothes. This also allowed the fashion industry to change trends more
