“A game that started with eighteen men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts, has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide. The man who created this instantly successful sport was Dr. James Naismith” (Athletic Scholarships). “When Dr. James Naismith went to the YMCA training school in Springfield in 1891, he noticed that the students faced a problem finding a sport to play indoors in the winter months” CITATION Geo14 \l 1033 (Laughead). “Dr. James was given two weeks to invent an indoor game that would provide an athletic distraction for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. He was going to bring outdoor games like soccer inside, but these games proved to be too physical, after brainstorming some new ideas, Dr. James developed basketball’s original 13 rules and, consequently, the game of basketball”(Athletic Scholarships). Basketball is the one of the major world sport developed in the United States.
Basketball has become really popular over the last hundred years, this is partially due to the fact that it requires minimal equipment and participants, you can save a lot of money to play, to play Basketball, all you need is a ball and another person to play with.
