The event began on July 28, 1914, after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia (“Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated.”). Creating controversies, this situation pinned Austria, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire against Great Britain, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, and Russia. The war ended on November 11, 1918, with the Treaty of Versailles being signed on June 28, 1919 (History.com Staff.). Germany was now forced to pay for the reparations of the war. Germany’s economy, half built, was left stranded. The Treaty took away many mines, resources, and benefits along with exports and imports. The unemployment rate quadrupled and other countries lost trust in Germany. With no one to help, the Germans needed a solution. After his release from prison, Adolf Hitler “rose to the plate” and comforted the German people with his propaganda and words. He was a man that, unlike Robert Lee, grew to like war and violence. Through fear and haste, the German people brought upon their own destruction. Without a second thought and after seeing his campaign or the third time, Hitler was elected as Reich Chancellor of Germany January 30, 1933 (“Adolf Hitler is named chancellor of Germany.”). The citizens were now convinced that he could fulfill their dreams for a perfect world. Hitler, however, envisioned the world with only one race, perfect Germans with blonde hair and blue eyes. Everyone else had to be “cleansed”, especially the Jewish population. His “Aryan” race would reign.
