In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Darcy’s love progresses more slowly and differently than Romeo and Juliet's immediate bond.
In the 1597 Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet, the story is set from the beginning. The prologue sets the stage for two young lovers and the ongoing feud between their families. The relationship between young Juliet and Romeo began at a party held by the family of Juliet. Romeo, who was in love with another girl at the time, decided to crash the party in order to see his love. “One fairer than my love?” Romeo said of Rosaline, his love at the time, when told there would be beautiful girls at the party. Elizabeth lives with her four sisters and her parents at their residence far outside of London. She first met her future love, Mr Darcy, at a ball. The two had rough first impressions, resulting in an initial dislike of each other. Elizabeth starts out by judging Darcy to be a “selfish individual who could not be likeable for his self centered personality.” (Austen, 61) Darcy claims that Elizabeth “is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me...” (Austen, 59) Clearly, their relationship starts slowly and is seemingly headed in the wrong direction. Their differing social status was another obstacle. However, as the story progresses, Darcy begins to see Elizabeth differently. As he gets over his prejudice against her family, he grows more admiring of her. But when he declares his love for her and proposes, he is rejected. “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” (Austen, 221) Elizabeth doesn’t share his feelings but later realizes she had made false judgments about Darcy and starts to have a change of heart. She warms up to him and begins to have thoughts of herself as Darcy’s wife. Ultimately, against some people's wishes, the two get engaged. Despite their different backgrounds, they overcame judgments of each other to find love and happiness
