Scenario:
Samantha a 19 y/o college freshman has started dating a guy that has been there for a while and is older than her by 4 years. His experience level is far greater than Samantha’s. She is the dorms speaking to her long time high school friend Candy about how to approach the subject of getting tested for an STD before they engage in sexual activities.
Samantha: Candy I need to ask your advice can you come sit down with me.
Candy takes a seat on Samantha’s bed and is all ears. She does this to remove barriers to communication and to signal her friend that he has her full attention. (Lesson, n.d)
Samantha: “Henry and I are going to take our relationship to the next level soon.”
Candy: “So, you mean to say that you are planning on having

Samantha: “I know it may sound like I don’t trust you and it may be hard to swallow but it isn’t you I don’t trust it’s the girls you have been with before me.”
She now gets into the details of her thought process that lead to her request. This action is due to her interpretation of his nonverbal feedback. (Greenberg, 2011, p. 83)
Henry: “I did not expect this when I sat down to eat with you but I don’t think this request is due to mistrust. It is a smart act, we are both smart people and I can follow your thought process. I can tell you that I haven’t been tested before so, even though it’s a little hard to admit you do have a valid point in asking for this.”
He clarifies his feedback and corrects the misinterpretation that happened and gives her the answer she was looking for by agreeing to her request to get tested. (Greenberg, 2011, p. 83)
Samantha: “I am glad you agree and even though I asked for this I have no idea how to go about the act of getting tested. I figured once we get passed this conversation we can figure this out
